What health markers do we test for?

We screen your dog for nearly 450 documented genetic health variants — drawn from OMIA (Online Mendelian Inheritance in Animals), the veterinary genetics community's central catalogue of inherited canine conditions — covering drug sensitivities like MDR1, eye and heart diseases, bleeding disorders, neurological conditions and more.

For every variant we tell you what matters in plain language: whether your dog is clear, a healthy carrier (important if you're ever breeding), or carries two copies and should discuss it with a vet. We also go where chip tests can't: checking every chromosome for missing or extra pieces, and flagging rare variants unique to your dog that no catalogue has ever listed.

A genetic result is a head start, not a diagnosis — your report is written to help you and your veterinarian take proactive steps together.

Deep Insight into Oral Health

Your dog's mouth is home to a complex ecosystem of hundreds of bacterial species — some protective, some linked to plaque, gum disease and bad breath. The same swab that captures your dog's DNA captures this ecosystem too, and no other dog DNA test reads it.

What does the oral microbiome test reveal?

Your dog's microbiome age. By studying how mouth bacteria shift as dogs get older, we trained an age estimator on more than 1,200 dogs. If your dog's microbiome "looks" older than their real age, that's an early, actionable signal about oral health — often before visible symptoms.

The bacteria linked to gum disease. We report the specific species veterinary research associates with periodontal disease — led by Porphyromonas gulae, the canine counterpart of the bacterium that drives gum disease in humans, along with Tannerella forsythia, Porphyromonas cangingivalis and others (Wallis 2015; Davis 2013; Nomura 2020). For each one, you see your dog's level as a percentile against our reference dogs — not just "present or absent," but how much, compared with everyone else.

The bacteria of a younger, healthier mouth. The same comparison for species that decline with age and gum trouble, like Conchiformibius steedae — where long bars are good news.

Anything unusual. If your dog carries a species most dogs don't, we flag it — including rare bacteria with known health associations.

How does our test differ from other dog DNA tests?

Every other major dog DNA test uses a microarray chip — a fixed list of a few hundred thousand DNA positions, chosen in advance. A chip can only answer questions someone thought to put on it.

We use whole genome sequencing (WGS) instead. If a chip is a page of snapshots, WGS is the complete map: we read your dog's genome across roughly 30 million positions — about a hundred times more of the genome than any chip test.

That difference isn't just a bigger number. It's what makes possible the things chips simply can't do:

  • Check every chromosome for missing or extra pieces — the kind of analysis human medicine relies on
  • Find rare and private variants — genetic changes unique to your dog that appear on no chip, anywhere
  • Read hard-to-measure genes directly from the sequence, instead of inferring them from nearby markers

And a genome is the gift that keeps on giving. A chip can never tell you more than what was printed on it — but your dog's full genome, sequenced once, is re-analysed as the science advances, free, for the life of your dog. This is not a promise on a page: in September 2026 we rebuilt our entire analysis, and every 2024 customer received a new report with twelve sections that did not exist when they ordered — chromosome painting, relatives, immune-gene diversity, trait genetics, paternal and maternal lines and more — from the same swab, at no charge.

What is the AI Health Advisor? Is it a vet?

It is an advisor built into your dog's report, and no, it is not a veterinarian. It has read your dog's whole genome — breed ancestry, the 450 inherited conditions we screen, drug-sensitivity genes, inbreeding, the oral microbiome — and it reads the health notes, vet records and photos you add. Ask it about a symptom, a medication, an upcoming procedure or a breeder's question, and it explains what your dog's genetics say and what to raise with your vet. It never diagnoses or prescribes; it makes your real vet visits better informed. No other dog DNA test includes anything like it.

Can I add my dog's vet records, notes and photos?

Yes, and we encourage it. Under Health Notes you can keep your dog's history, medications, vaccinations and vet contacts; under Upload Vet Data you can add lab results and vet documents; and you can add photos. The AI Health Advisor reads all of it alongside the genome, so its answers get better as your dog's record grows. Everything you add is private to your account.

Does my report expire? What happens after I get my results?

Nothing expires — that is the point of sequencing the whole genome. Your dog's report lives in your account for life, and every time we add an analysis it is applied to your dog automatically and free. In September 2026 every customer from 2024 received twelve new sections from the same swab. You can also request your dog's raw sequence data at any time by emailing info@prosperk9.com.

My dog is a rescue or mixed breed — will this work?

It's the ideal case. Mixed and unknown-ancestry dogs are exactly where whole-genome testing shines: we match your dog's DNA chromosome-by-chromosome against 220+ breeds plus village-dog populations from seven world regions and the gray wolf — so even street-dog ancestry gets a real answer instead of a forced breed label.
