What this test Reveals
Breed
Curious about your dog's breed?
Our comprehensive test analyzes your dog's entire genome and compares it to over 340 reference breeds to determine the breed composition. With one of the largest and continuously expanding reference breed databases available, we meticulously match each region of your pup's DNA to our database, providing an accurate breakdown of the breeds that make up your furry friend.
Health
What health markers do we test for?
Our comprehensive Dog DNA Test analyzes health and trait markers from the OMIA (Online Mendelian Inheritance in Animals) and other databases. This test offers deep insights into your dog's genetic makeup, focusing on inherited diseases and key traits such as coat color, size, and behavior tendencies. The OMIA database is a leading resource for genetic information, ensuring that our test provides the most accurate and relevant results. Discover what your dog’s DNA reveals to take proactive steps toward their well-being.
Oral Health
Deep Insight into Oral Health:
Understand the complex ecosystem residing in your dog's mouth, including beneficial and harmful bacteria. This test helps identify specific strains that may contribute to common issues like plaque buildup, gum disease, and bad breath, empowering you with the knowledge to take preventative measures.
What does the oral microbiome test reveal?
Our test measures the presence of hundreds of bacteria that are found in a dog's mouth. We track how the composition of these bacteria changes between young healthy dogs and older dogs that suffer from oral inflammation, such as gingivitis. We then report a health score of your dog's oral microbiome as well as six specific bacteria that may be contributing to gingivitis and other oral health complications.
Here is more information about the six specific bacteria we report:
Porphyromonas gingivalis (P. gingivalis): A major causative agent in the initiation and progression of severe forms of periodontal disease. Minimizing P. gingivalis is beneficial for your dog’s oral health. (Nomura et. al., 2020)
Campylobacter sp. RM16192: Campylobacter has been associated with the initiation and progression of severe forms of periodontal disease. Minimizing Campylobacter is beneficial for your dog’s oral health. (Nomura et. al., 2020)
Porphyromonas crevioricanis (P. cangingivalis): P. cangingivalis is the most prevalent canine oral bacterial species in both plaque from healthy gingiva and plaque from dogs with early periodontitis. Minimizing P. cangingivalis is beneficial for your dog’s oral health. (O’Flynn et. al., 2015)
Conchiformibius steedae (C. steedae): C. steedae was found to be more abundant in dogs with healthier teeth compared to dogs less healthy teeth based on amount of plaque and abundance of oral diseases in dogs. Increasing the amount of C. steedae is beneficial for your dog’s oral health. (Wallis et. al., 2021)
Moraxella osloensis (M. osloensis): Our database has indicated that M. osloensis is associated with younger dogs and increasing the amount of M. osloensis is beneficial for your dog’s oral health.
Rothia aeria (R. aeria): R. aeria has been shown to protect against, and even fight plaque growth. Our database has also found that the abundance of R. aeria tends to decrease with age. Therefore, increasing the amount of R. aeria is beneficial for your dog’s oral health. (Mazurel et. al., 2023)
* All bacteria listed above were determined to be associated with age by a recent study by ProsperK9. As expected, the 3 bacteria you want to minimize tend to increase with age, and the 3 bacteria you want to have
More Information
How does our test differ from other dog DNA tests?
Whole genome sequencing (WGS) is like getting a full map of a dog's DNA, offering many benefits over older DNA tests like microarrays. Imagine if microarrays give us snapshots of a dog's genetics, then WGS gives us the entire map. This means we can see all the tiny details in a dog's genes, not just what we were looking for. It helps us find rare or new genetic traits that older tests might miss. This is important for understanding a dog's health, where they come from, and even unique things about their breed. Plus, as this technology gets better and cheaper, it's a gift that keeps on giving. We can keep learning new things from the same DNA data without having to test again. This makes WGS a more detailed and valuable tool for learning about our furry friends' genetic health and history.
Behind the Science
At ProsperK9, we employ the latest advancements in genetic testing to provide the most comprehensive insights into your dog's DNA.

Let customers speak for us
from 52 reviewsI was so excited to get the info on Millie. When I got her from Bother Wolf in Asheville, NC, we thought she was a Pitbull. I had decided to get a fourth dog, and my husband said that would be fine, but just no Pitbull. Well, what did I come home with?? A Pitbull. I wondered if she was truly a Pitty--there were things about her that looked like she might be a Staffy more than the Pitbull. I wanted a Staffy, but when I saw her, she was what I wanted to take home with me. Having her for almost a year and then finding out she was what I was wanting to begin with was wonderful--but I would have continued to love her no matter what! Thank you for the info and in a timely manner--Linda C
Prosper K9 is great to work with! The communication has been great and I cannot wait to see the results!
We don’t have a way to test the accuracy of the test, but the process was efficient and results were presented well. It was very interesting to see what breeds made up our rescue puppy!
A little slow but worth the wait
The kit was easy to use and I learned a lot about the puppy I had. The results explained the color markings and suspicions that I had about the puppy, She has no beagle in her but she happens to be one of the best dogs I have ever had. She is smart as a whip and learns very fast. I wouldn't trade her for a true beagle. I recommend this kit for anyone who wants to learn more about their pets origins
I got my dog from a kill shelter They did a good job at5 guessing what he was. But k9 HIT RIGHT ON THE HEAD THANKS
Got way more information than I was expecting. Detailed deed breakdown with dog tree. Health analysis of genetic predispositions for serious and benign conditions. Predictive dominant and recessive traits of potential offspring. Crazy amount of information..
Seems very accurate and detailed
I had questions that I emailed to this company, and the questions were answered immediately. I thank the people responsible for these replies.
Received report in 3 weeks. Was very pleased with results. Was what I expected, but needed proof because of places I go. Good info, great price.
Easy process from sample to signing up. Can see that it was received, now the wait. Funny, the only bad reviews are from people who simply don’t like or disagree with results😂. I know half my girls DNA so I’m excited to see the rest! As an ex-zookeeper and animal caretaker for 20+ years, I know all is not always as it appears!

Disappointed that the health review was not further explained. A group of genotypes and markers do not tell me the percentage of those markers to know if my dog is at risk. DNA report good and easy to understand but I reached out for interpretation of the health report and received NO contact from Prosper K9. To spend close to $100 just to know the breed of my dog isn’t something I would deem necessary so was really looking forward to the health summary only to be disappointed.
